Ran Kirlian & Landru – Waterfront [AOR0006]

WaterfrontWaterfront is the consolidation of the first acclaimed collaborative work between the ambient artists Ran Kirlian and Landru, co-owners of the online ambient label Altera Orbe.

Recorded as a real time performance during one whole session and later mastered at the artists’ recording studios, Waterfront reflects the interaction between the sublime drones and ethereal ambiences created by Ran Kirlian and the hypnotic and melodic sonic riffs and tribal percussion loops composed by Landru.

Using both digital and analog synthesizers as the main sound sources, Waterfront has a very unique organic mood, mainly thanks to those background ambience landscapes provided by real ethnic instruments and dedicated field recordings.

Vauxia Errante – Cambrian Spirits [AOR0009]

Cambrian SpiritsCambrian Spirits is the first album by Vauxia errante, a dark and deep subterranean-ambient work full of drones, complex textures and field recordings from the underworld. The album, recorded during 20011 and 2012 features Ran Kirlian on synths, flutes and tribal grooves on some tracks as well as on production. The album art was also created by his friend, while thematics and pictures comes from Vauxia’s secondary passions: photography and paleontology.

His creative process combines electronics, voices and field recordings in a deconstructive research. Darkness, cavernous and underground are words that comes to mind after listening to Vauxia Errante textures and sonic experiments.

Vauxia Errante

Vauxia Errante is the alias of a history teacher born and located in Valencia (Spain) who prefers to remain anonymous in his music career. He started playing music in 2008 as a hobby influenced by his love for ambient and dark-ambient genres. During the last years, this innocent hobby has become a serious passion with a deep research and time-consuming dedication, redefining dark and drone music in which he classifies as Subterranean Ambient. His first music project was developed with the support of his long time friend Ran Kirlian letting them start some collaborative works.

His most prefered instruments are software synths like Reaktor, Kontakt, Alchemy and a large amount of VSTis and iOS Apps. He also uses to include voices and field recordings as source material for his sonic experiments.

Strongly influenced by the music of Oöphoi, Mathias Grassow, Thommas Köner, Vidna Obmana , Nik Parkin , Jeff Greinke, Alio Die, Viridian Sun, Lustmord, Zeit, Yen Pox, Nimh, Aglaia, Kenneth Newby and a lot more.

Ran Kirlian

Born in Hannover (Germany) in 1972 and later moved to Valencia (Spain), Ran Kirlian began exploring his own musical pathways in the mid-nineties and recorded his first album Shore of Darkness in 2000. Since then nearly a dozen albums have followed, among which include Obscurity (2000), Melting Point (2001), Sleeper (2004) and his lastest work Dissolution (2009). Also, two albums entitled Selected Works I & Selected Works II were released in 2007 collecting music recorded and released between years 2000 and 2007 from tribal-ambient to dark and space ambient genres.

His music, mostly focussed on tribal and dark ambient genres, offers a personal and intense approach to textural landscaping and atmospheres inspiring ritualistic environments, cold spaces and desolate landscapes. Defined as a self-taught musician, he uses to start most of his projects from raw improvisations that later evolve in a continuous refinement process.

With synthesizers and samplers as his main tools, his music tries to combine different sound sources like field recordings, exotic flutes, percussions and ethnic instruments like bowls and didgeridoos. This mixture carries evident influences from artists like Steve Roach, Alio Die, Robert Rich, Mathias Grassow, Oöphoi, Lustmord, Thom Brennan and Jorge Reyes.

The Woomh Files: a journey of almost ten years

The Woomh FilesAltera Orbe started releasing EPs and minialbums back in 2012 under the special Woomh category, trying to offer to the artist another way to create and release music on an altertive format that allowed a faster develope. The idea was to catch ideas in distinction to the classic album format and time lenght, being perfect for little live performances, smaller conceptual works, medium-form pieces with identity, etc. In the end a lot of ideas fitted the format that sometimes was also possible to have a physical release in mini-CD (210Mb/ 24 minutes).

Ran Kirlian has released a dozen mini-albums in the Woomh series, being a few of them even earlier to the Woomh concept, ranging from year 2009 to 2019. Now he released an album collecting pieces from each of these mini-works with a fine mix that melt them together and also incluides some extrastuff like a pair if unreleased tracks and 12 pages booklet containing a lot of information about the making of these recordings and their artworks. It acts both like a sample of the music pictured on the Woomh series and as a portrait of a ten years journey across Ran Kirlian music.

The Woomh Files is available at Bandcamp for free or name your price.

The Many Futures of Ran Kirlian

IMany Futures 1n September 2018 Ran Kirlian released a new EP with 3 tracks entitled «Many Futures issue nº1». Beyond the naive title, its cover art and layout looked closer to a vintage sci-fi magazine than to the typical Woomh albums. Also it did not followed the catalog number of the series, however it is an Altera Orbe minialbum release, but belonging to a new conceptual series, parallel to the Woomh series.

Many Futures is a series of mini albums that collects Ran Kirlian musical and sonic impressions around years of science fiction literature reading.

As Ran says: «More than just a soundtrack for those stories, these tracks are my personal vision of the future portrayed by the authors on their stories. That’s where the series title comes, as the music contained in this and further volumes flows around the many alternative futures of the humankind.»
